The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) deploys frontal air bags as required with a two-stage output that helps the air bag system protect against air bag induced injuries to small, unbelted, or out-of-position occupants.

In the event of a front impact, the collapsible steering column compresses up to 4 inches, absorbing energy as the driver contacts the deploying air bag.
